MEMIC Accepting Applications for 2008 Horizon Scholarship

PORTLAND, ME, February 4, 2008—MEMIC is once again accepting applications for its annual Horizon Scholarship Program. This program offers a $5,000 scholarship to a deserving student or students whose parent or spouse was seriously hurt as a result of a workplace injury. Students must complete the application and all its requirements by April 11, 2008 to be considered for the scholarship.
The Horizon Scholarship was developed in 2000 by the MEMIC Board of Directors as a way of acknowledging the difficulty that a workplace injury can place upon the hopes and dreams of family. While workers’ compensation insurance provides medical treatment and replaces a percentage of lost wages, it cannot eliminate the financial strain that an injury can cause if, for instance, other members of the family must take time from work to tend to their loved one. Our hope, of course, is to avoid injuries in the first place, but with this scholarship we hope to help a family confronted by a significant injury to see a brighter future on the horizon.
In that spirit, MEMIC has presented scholarships each year since 2001 to the spouse or child of workers who have been seriously hurt as a result of a workplace injury. This year’s scholarship for $5,000 will bring our total since 2001 to $50,000.
Applicants will be judged on their past academic transcripts, citizenship and future promise. Students must be attending (or planning to attend) an accredited college or university and MEMIC will pay the school directly upon receiving bill. Employer of injured worker must have carried MEMIC as its workers’ compensation insurer at the time of injury.
