Doug Dean
Safety Management Consultant, PE, CSP, CIH, CHMM®, WCP®
“My father was a safety manager at a rayon manufacturing plant in the early 1960s, several years before the advent of OSHA. He took the challenge of preventing significant injuries personally, and at the time they were very common. My mother obtained her GED while in her 40s and went on to college to become a registered nurse. Her job included compassionate care for injured workers so they could return to their families and their work. Safety consulting to prevent injury and illness is more than what I do; it’s a part of who I am.”
Doug has more than 30 years of experience in Florida as a safety and health consultant, and as a corporate safety manager for a large electric power generation and transmission company. Thirteen of those years he owned a consulting business that delivered a broad range of safety, industrial hygiene and emergency preparedness services to municipalities and industries nationwide, primarily in Florida. Many of these projects involved coaching and other interactions with all functional levels of each organization, from management to line supervisors, to achieve project objectives.
His business partnered with the University of Florida to develop instructor-led and online workshops teaching the application of ANSI Z-10 and ISO 45001 safety management systems for continuous safety improvement. His knowledge of safety management system development and implementation proved useful in his role as a corporate safety manager, facilitating a team approach with facility representatives to establish consistent, effective safety programs across multiple sites that led to a documented reduction in the rate of OSHA-recordable injuries at all locations. Doug received his degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Florida. He holds credentials as a Professional Engineer, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, and Certified Hazardous Materials Manager.
