MEMIC Awards $10,000 in Scholarships to Maine Students

PORTLAND, Maine, June 17, 2002 – At its annual meeting of policyholders on June 17, 2002, Maine Employers' Mutual Insurance Company (MEMIC) made scholarship awards totaling $10,000 to three Maine students.

Kathryn LaMothe of Thorndike was awarded a $5,000 MEMIC Horizon Scholarship. LaMothe will be a senior at Gordon College in Wenham, Mass. LaMothe is a graduate of Mt. View High School and she has maintained a grade point average of 3.67 at Gordon. She will graduate after just 3 ½ years with a degree in Business Administration.

Twin brothers Jesse and Justin Michaud of St. Francis were awarded scholarships of $2,500 each. The pair recently graduated from Fort Kent Community High School where both achieved averages above 90 (on a scale to 100). In addition they have been involved in a myriad of school and community events. Justin will attend the University of Southern Maine to study biology while Jesse will attend the University of Maine - Farmington to study psychology.

The MEMIC Horizon Scholarship is given annually to the child or a spouse of a worker who has been seriously injured as a result of a workplace injury. The program, which made its debut in 2001, was created by the MEMIC Board of Directors as an acknowledgement of the unexpected impact that a workplace injury can have on a family.

Winners were selected on the basis of their financial need, academic achievement, community involvement and their future promise.
