A College Scholarship Fund for Families of Injured Workers

PORTLAND, Maine, April 3, 2014 – Workers’ compensation insurer MEMIC is once again accepting applications for its Harvey Picker Horizon Scholarship Program.

This program offers a scholarship of up to $5,000 to the spouse or child who was seriously hurt as a result of a workplace injury. Potential winners must complete the application and all requirements by April 25, 2014 to be considered for the scholarship.

The Harvey Picker Horizon Scholarship was approved in 2000 by the MEMIC Board of Directors as an acknowledgement of the difficulty that a workplace injury can place upon the hopes and dreams of family. While workers’ compensation insurance provides medical treatment and replaces a percentage of lost wages, it cannot eliminate the financial strain that an injury can cause if, for instance, other members of the family must take time from work to tend to their loved one. While MEMIC’s goal is to avoid injuries in the first place, with this scholarship the company hopes to help a family confronted by a significant injury to see a brighter future on the horizon.

The scholarship was named for Harvey Picker, a former member of the company’s board of directors whose experiences displayed his love of education.

MEMIC has presented scholarships each year since 2001 and has now made awards totaling $100,000.

Applicants will be judged on academic transcripts, citizenship and future promise. Students must be attending (or planning to attend) an accredited college or university. To be eligible, the related injured worker must have been working for a MEMIC policyholder at the time of injury.

For more information and to request a copy of the application, please call 1-800-660-1306 or visit our Harvey Picker Horizon Scholarship Program web page here.
