In partnership with the company’s staff, policyholders, and academia, The MEMIC Safety Research Center will facilitate the understanding and prevention of occupational injuries and illnesses.

(PORTLAND, ME) — Today, MEMIC launches the MEMIC Safety Research Center with a call for grant applications that focus on understanding and reducing the probability of occupational injuries and illnesses. Funding is available to higher-education institutions across the nation. 

“This new effort of our Loss Control and Safety Team is an exciting time in MEMIC’s history,” says Michael Bourque, CEO and President of The MEMIC Group. “The establishment of the MEMIC Safety Research Center invites academic researchers to examine workforce safety challenges with the hope of finding solutions that reduce the frequency and severity of work-related injuries. In the end, by helping to support meaningful research, we will gain insight to help our policyholders in new and exciting ways.”

The MEMIC Safety Research Center was launched as part of the Company’s mission “to make workers’ comp work better with compassion, trusted partnerships, and relentless commitment to workforce safety.” By working closely with their policyholder partners over the past 27 years, MEMIC’s team of safety experts has continuously observed, collected, and analyzed data to identify the root causes of injuries and to provide practical preventive solutions.

“We often use safety techniques designed in the 20th century to address risks created in the 21st century. Some work; some do not. This is where research comes in,” says Karl Siegfried, MEMIC SVP of Loss Control & Safety Services. “To effectively address the new risks that employees and employers face, we need to continue advancing the science of safety. It is our hope that the Center will help produce new techniques, devices, and training to prevent injuries and improve working conditions.”

Proposals Now Being Accepted for 2021 Grants

Grant applications for the MEMIC Safety Research Center are for studies that will have a positive impact to workforce safety and health within in all industries and sectors. Funding is available for researchers in higher-education institutions within the United States and its territories.

The MEMIC Safety Research Center will award up to three $10,000 grants in its first year. Grant winners will be announced at The MEMIC Group’s Annual Meeting and Award Ceremony in June.
