3 underwriters expand MEMIC’s reach

Anderson, Dutrow, Shindel bring decades of underwriting experience

(Portland, ME) – MEMIC, workers’ compensation insurance specialists, recently added three experienced underwriters to its Eastern Region team.

Matt Anderson joined MEMIC’s Northeast region as Middle Market Production Underwriter in Massachusetts, while the company’s Mid-Atlantic region added Senior Production Underwriter Sondra Shindel and Senior Middle Market Underwriter Kate Dutrow.

Anderson said he plans to emphasize MEMIC’s history of driving down workers’ compensation costs with businesses throughout New England. He began his insurance career at Travelers Insurance in 2018 as an Operations Specialist in the Collections Unit, with responsibility for subrogation, crediting, reporting, and helping manage vendor relationships. He studied in Travelers’ Underwriting Professional Development Program in 2020 and handled lines for their new Small Commercial business in the Northeast.

“While many businesses in Massachusetts and elsewhere in New England have certainly heard of MEMIC, I’m excited to be able to fill in the details of what we can do for their bottom lines and the safety of their work forces,” Anderson said.

“We’re very excited to have Matt join our strong Northeast team at MEMIC, bringing his solid industry experience and knowledge of the MEMIC difference with him. Matt will play a key role in expanding our footprint in Massachusetts going forward,” Northeast Territory Manager Jim Keck said. “In only his first few months, he’s made a favorable impact in his territory with our key agents and brokers.”

Shindel comes to MEMIC as a Senior Production Underwriter with more than 15 years of insurance experience, first in underwriting workers’ compensation policies, then all lines of business, soon adding marketing and sales responsibilities.

“Pennsylvania is a relatively new market for MEMIC, and I am so excited to introduce our safety culture and competitive workers’ compensation option to my longtime partners here,” she said.

Dutrow, a Senior Middle Market Underwriter, began her insurance career with an independent agency in 2004 and moved to the carrier side in 2008. She has worked with national carriers and super regionals underwriting all lines before transitioning to monoline workers’ compensation underwriting in 2016.

“I’m excited to build the momentum of the MEMIC brand in the Mid-Atlantic region by delivering solutions to our agency partners and their customers,” she said. “From small business to large loss sensitive options and everything in between, I’m ready to help MEMIC grow.”

Mid-Atlantic Territory Manager Margaret Templeton said the additions of Dutrow and Shindel add expertise to her staff as they extend MEMIC product offerings to a larger number of businesses in the Mid-Atlantic region.

“I’m excited to have Sondra and Kate joining the Mid-Atlantic team,” she said. “Their knowledge and expertise fit perfectly with MEMIC’s approach of serving a select group of policyholders and agents, and I look forward to helping them build successful territories in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware.”

Anderson, who lives in Massachusetts, enjoys hiking and going to concerts.

Dutrow, who lives in Gettysburg, Pa., enjoys her “soccer mom” status and is an assistant coach for the local swim team.

Shindel, a graduate of Millersville University with a degree in Economics, lives in Mechanicsburg, Pa. She enjoys being a sports mom, coaching her son’s basketball team and cheering on his baseball endeavors. She also enjoys traveling and attending Pittsburgh Penguins games every chance she gets.
