Workers' comp basics
Answers to common workers' comp questions
Workers’ compensation is insurance that helps protect employees who are injured or become ill because of their work. It can cover medical care and replace a portion of lost wages, subject to state law.
Workers’ compensation requirements vary by state, including who must carry coverage and what benefits are available.
Most states require employers to carry workers’ compensation insurance, although requirements and exemptions vary.
If an employee is injured at work, report the injury to MEMIC to start the claims process. Once the injury is reported and determined to be compensable, MEMIC can provide appropriate access to medical providers and pay applicable wage-replacement benefits.
The cost of workers’ compensation insurance depends on several factors, including the type of work your employees perform and your payroll. Jobs with greater risk generally cost more to insure.
Rates for job classifications are filed with state agencies and are typically applied to each $100 of payroll. For example, if a classification rate is $4 per $100 of payroll and an employee earns $400 per week:
$400 ÷ $100 = 4
4 × $4 = $16 per week
Your actual premium may also be affected by factors such as your claims experience and other credits, debits or fees that vary by state. Talk with your insurance agent for details about your business.
Requirements for subcontractors vary by state, so it’s important to understand the rules where you do business.
In Maine, for example, an independent contractor relationship may involve a contract, appropriate certificates of insurance and/or a filed Predetermination of Independent Contractor Status.
MEMIC workers’ compensation coverage is available through independent insurance agents. Your agent can help you understand your coverage needs and guide you through the process.
