What is it?
Workers' compensation is insurance carried by employers to provide for benefits for occupational injuries or disease suffered by an employee, regardless of fault. The benefits include payment of medical services and lost wages, subject to limits set by law. Workers' compensation law is set by states, which means that administration of these laws vary from state to state. In most states, workers' compensation is the exclusive remedy for the coverage of work-related injuries by the employer. Most states require employers to carry workers' compensation insurance.

Who is MEMIC?
MEMIC is a workers' compensation insurer. Employers buy our insurance policies through independent insurance agencies.

How does it work?
When an employee is injured, the employer must contact MEMIC to begin the process of making a claim against the policy. Once an injury is reported, we provide appropriate access to medical providers and will pay appropriate wage-replacement benefits.

How much does it cost?
Workers' compensation insurance costs are based upon the kind of work an employee does and the wages earned for that work. As you might guess, some kinds of work, jobs that have higher risk, are more costly to insure than others. Rates for certain job types are filed with the state regulatory agencies within each state that MEMIC has a license as a workers' compensation insurer. In addition, an employer's history of injuries or claims can impact the cost of insurance for that individual employer.
