This program offers a scholarship of up to $5,000 to a deserving student or students whose parent or spouse was seriously hurt as a result of a workplace injury. Students must complete the application and all requirements by April 30, 2010 to be considered for the scholarship. The Harvey Picker Horizon Scholarship was approved in 2000 by the MEMIC Board of Directors as an acknowledgement of the difficulty that a workplace injury can place upon the hopes and dreams of family. While workers’ compensation insurance provides medical treatment and replaces a percentage of lost wages, it cannot eliminate the financial strain that an injury can cause if, for instance, other members of the family must take time from work to tend to their loved one. While MEMIC’s goal is to avoid injuries in the first place, with this scholarship the company hopes to help a family confronted by a significant injury to see a brighter future on the horizon. MEMIC has presented scholarships each year since 2001 and has now made awards totaling $55,000. Applicants will be judged on academic transcripts, citizenship and future promise. Students must be attending (or planning to attend) an accredited college or university. To be eligible, the related injured worker must have been working for a MEMIC policyholder at the time of injury. For more information and to request a copy of the application, please call 1-800-660-1306 (at the name prompt, say "Horizon Scholarship") or download the application here. ### About MEMIC |
